Polymer-modified roof membranes use reinforcing fabrics as carriers for hot polymer-modified bitumen rolled in the factory. On the roof, modified bitumen systems are built in multiple layers, much like traditional built-up roofs — redundancy you do not get from a single thin sheet.
Five basic components can be assembled in a number of combinations: insulation for R-value and a stable substrate; modified or unmodified base and ply sheets; a factory-fabricated modified bitumen membrane (typically polyester, fiberglass, or composite reinforced); hot- or cold-applied adhesive; and a factory or field-applied surfacing for UV protection.
Flashings waterproof the perimeter, equipment curbs, and penetrations. That is where these systems succeed or fail, and it is where we spend the attention.
